Background

Shell and partners required a 36” fiberglass water pipeline for the Albian Sands project. Ledcor Pipeline Ltd. was awarded the job, which included a 750 m crossing under the Muskeg River in
a 48” steel casing.

Challenge

Because carrier pipe tends to “spiral” during installation, choosing a spacer that provides continual support, and eliminates damage to the carrier pipe resulting from metal bolts was a priority.

Solution

RACI Casing Spacers provided a solution to address these issues. Because the runners of RACI spacers surround the entire pipe circumference, the pipe is constantly supported as it spirals. Additionally, RACI is made of molded HDPE with no bolts. Joining is achieved by a patented “snap lock” design.

Benefit

Because RACI spacer rings are made up of elements, all product was shipped to the job site in cartons reducing freight costs, storagecosts, and no chance of damage during transport. The timesaving “snap lock” design reduces labor and hardware costs. The adaptability of RACI make inventory regularly available for all types of pipe.
